See Your Site as Google Sees It, aka - Fetch as Googlebot
Whenever I start SEO on a new site, there are a few steps I take to get an idea of how the site stands at the moment, things like, checking the domain age, checking the number and quality of incoming links and finding out how the site's top online competitors are doing. One important step is to run the site through a spider simulator to make sure search engines (or Google really!) can see all of the navigation, content, meta data on the most important pages on the site.
I came across a handy tool in Google Webmaster Tools that makes this part of the job very easy and it's called "Fetch as Googlebot". When you log into your Google Webmaster Tools, go into the Labs section on the left and click on Fetch as Googlebot. Wait for a couple of minutes and then click on "Success" to see all spiderable content. And it's specifically for Googlebot, the only tool I've found so far that focuses on Google only. After all, years of SEO won't work a bit if Google can't see your site.
